doping

The USA team that was initially victorious was subsequently disqualified. Antonio Pettigrew , a member of the squadron, later confessed to buying doping drugs, including erythropoietin , also known as EPO, and growth hormones from Angel Heredia, a Mexican dealer, from 1997 onwards . As a result, he was stripped of some results, including his two results in the 400 meters and 4 × 400 m from these world championships. The gold medal had to be returned.

Two teams in particular were disadvantaged:

  • South Africa - The relay team received its bronze medal late and was unable to attend the award ceremony.
  • Germany - The team could have taken part in the final by placing it in second place in the second heat.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first two seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
