Gregory Haughton

Gregory Haughton (born November 10, 1973 in Saint Mary Parish ) is a former Jamaican athlete who won a medal in four consecutive world championships with the 4-by-400-meter relay .

Career

At the Junior World Championships in 1992 Haughton won silver with the Jamaican relay. The following year he took part for the first time in major championships in the adult class. At the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 , he was sixth in the 400-meter run in 45.63 seconds . Two years later at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg , Haughton ran the fastest race of his career; in 44.56 seconds he won bronze behind the Americans Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds . The season took second place behind the US season.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , Haughton only appeared in the relay and won bronze behind the relay from the USA and from the UK. Also in 1997 Haughton appeared at the major championships only in the relay, at the World Indoor Championships he won silver behind the relay from the USA, at the 1997 World Championships bronze behind the USA and the United Kingdom. In Kuala Lumpur at the 1998 Commonwealth Games , Haughton was the best Jamaican in the individual finals, finishing sixth in 45.49 seconds. The Jamaican relay won ahead of England and Wales, as the UK's best runners were split between the two relays.

In 1999 Haughton won gold at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 44.59 seconds ahead of Danny McCray from the USA and the Mexican Alejandro Cárdenas . The Jamaican season was also successful. A month later at the 1999 World Championships in Seville , Haughton finished 7th in the final in 45.07 seconds, 76 hundredths of a second behind Cárdenas, who also won bronze in Seville. The Jamaican relay won the bronze medal behind the US and Poland.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Haughton won bronze in 44.70 seconds behind Michael Johnson and Alvin Harrison . With the relay he also won bronze. Haughton also won two bronze medals at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton . In the individual decision he was 44.98 seconds behind Avard Moncur from the Bahamas and the German Ingo Schultz , but a hundredth of a second ahead of the best American Antonio Pettigrew . In the season decision, the Americans won before the season of the Bahamas and Jamaica. In 2004 Haughton stood again on the podium when he won the relay at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest.
