The women's 400-meter run at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held from August 22nd to 26th, 1999 in the Olympic Stadium in the Spanish city ​​of Seville .

The world champion was the Australian defending champion and Olympic runner-up in 1996, Cathy Freeman , who had also won bronze at the 1995 World Championships with her country's 4 x 100 meter relay . Second place went to the German Anja Rücker , who had previously won several medals with her 4 x 400 meter relay : World Cup 1997 : gold / OS 1996 : bronze / EM 1994 : bronze. Here in Seville, too, there was another relay bronze for Anja Rücker on the final day. Lorraine Graham from Jamaica came third . She had won bronze at the 1997 World Championships as a member of the Jamaican 4 x 400 meter relay.
