The women's 400-meter run at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held from August 22nd to 26th, 1999 in the Olympic Stadium in the Spanish city of Seville .
The world champion was the Australian defending champion and Olympic runner-up in 1996, Cathy Freeman , who had also won bronze at the 1995 World Championships with her country's 4 x 100 meter relay . Second place went to the German Anja Rücker , who had previously won several medals with her 4 x 400 meter relay : World Cup 1997 : gold / OS 1996 : bronze / EM 1994 : bronze. Here in Seville, too, there was another relay bronze for Anja Rücker on the final day. Lorraine Graham from Jamaica came third . She had won bronze at the 1997 World Championships as a member of the Jamaican 4 x 400 meter relay.

The world championship record, which has existed since the first world championships in 1983, was missed here in Seville by 1.68 seconds. Only the three medal winners Cathy Freeman , Anja Rücker and Lorraine Graham stayed below the fifty second mark.
Four national records were set:
- 51.68 s - Claudine Komgang ( Comoros ), 4th advance on August 22nd
- 51.90 s - Kaltouma Nadjina ( Chad ), 5th advance on August 22nd
- 53.25 s - Grace Dinkins ( Liberia ), 7th advance on August 22nd
- 50.77s - Amy Mbacké Thiam ( Senegal ), 2nd semi-final on August 24th

The preliminary round was carried out in seven runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
