The men's discus throw at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held on August 22nd and 24th, 1999 in the Olympic Stadium in the Spanish city of Seville .
In this competition the German discus throwers won two medals, silver and bronze. World champion was US American Anthony Washington , who won the discus throw at the 1991 Pan American Games .
Silver went to the Olympic champion in 1988 , Olympic II of 1992 , world champion in 1987 , two-time World Cup -third ( 1993 / 1997 ), European champion in 1990 , European Vice Champion of 1994 , EM -third of 1998 and world record holder Jürgen Schult .
The four-time world champion ( 1991 /1993/ 1995 /1997), Olympic champion in 1996 and European champion Lars Riedel won the bronze medal.

Record improvement
The US world champion Anthony Washington improved the existing World Cup record in the final on August 24th by 32 centimeters to 69.08 m.

qualification
37 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 64.50 m. Two athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the ten next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 62.79 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

Virgilijus Alekna was fourth without a medal - that changed in the years to come, so he became Olympic champion the next year
