August 27, 1999, 6:55 pm
33 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 1.94 m. After seven athletes had already made one or two unsuccessful attempts over 1.94 m, it became clear that exactly thirteen high jumpers had mastered 1.92 m (highlighted in light green). The jury decided that the qualification could be canceled at this point and that all thirteen athletes were qualified for the final with a skipped 1.92 m.
