qualification
August 21, 1999, 11:30 a.m.
33 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 6.80 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine athletes placed next to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 6.62 m had to be achieved for the final.
The placement rule for the better second best attempt was also used. Dawn Burrell , who was twelfth in both qualification groups , had, in addition to her 6.62 m as the best jump, a distance of 6.56 m for her second best attempt. Tatjana Kotowa with 6.62 m had achieved the second best distance of 6.53 m and was eliminated in thirteenth place overall.
