final

August 9, 1997, 6:25 p.m.

In this final there was a deviation from the otherwise usual rule that the best eight athletes, in contrast to the jumpers placed behind them, have three more attempts after three jumps. In eighth place, two athletes were tied with the same width of 6.64 m, whereby the second best attempt was not used for further differentiation. In this case, nine participants were allowed three more attempts.
