The men's marathon at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 10, 1997 in the streets of the Greek capital, Athens .

The Spanish marathon runners achieved a double victory in this competition. World champion was the reigning European champion over 10,000 meters and European Championship third over 5000 meters from 1994 Abel Antón . The defending champion and reigning European champion Martín Fiz came in second. Bronze went to the Australian Steve Moneghetti .

For the first time at world championships there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. This explains the extremely high number of participants this year. Five runners per nation were allowed, the times of the best three were added up for the evaluation. However, this competition was not part of the official medal table. The team from Spain won ahead of Italy and Brazil.

World championship record 2:10:03 h AustraliaAustralia Robert de Castella World Cup in Helsinki , Finland August 14, 1983

Note:
At that time, records were not kept in marathon running and street walking because of the different track conditions with the exception of championship records.

Even at these world championships, nobody came close to the world championship record that had existed since the first world championship in 1983 .
