Steve Moneghetti (actually: Stephen James Moneghetti ; born September 26, 1962 in Ballarat ), a descendant of immigrants from Monte Carasso , is a former Australian long-distance runner who was particularly successful in marathon running .

From 1988 to 2000 he took part in four Olympic Games in marathons. When he took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul for the first time , he finished fifth in 2:11:49 h, his best placement. In 1992 in Barcelona he only reached 48th place, but when he finished seventh in Atlanta in 1996 and tenth in Sydney in 2000 , he was twice in the top ten.

At World Athletics Championships he competed a total of five times in marathons (1987, 1991, 1995, 1997 and 2000) and always achieved a place in the top thirty, three times in the top ten. He achieved his best result by winning the bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. In addition, he started at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 as an exception in the 10,000-meter run , but was eliminated in the preliminary round.

At the Commonwealth Games , he won three medals in the marathon. It increased from event to event. He finished third in Edinburgh in 1986 , and second in Auckland in 1990, before finally winning in Victoria in 1994 . In 1998 in Kuala Lumpur he was also able to win the bronze medal in the 10,000 m.

Moneghetti was also successful in city marathons. In 1990 he won the Berlin Marathon in the world's best time of 2:08:16 hours, which was also his personal best. In 1994 he won the Tokyo International Men's Marathon in a time of 2:08:55 h.

Below the marathon distance, he celebrated his greatest success as a silver medalist at the World Half Marathon Championships in Brussels in 1993 , where he also took second place in the Nations Cup with his teammates John Andrews and Pat Carrol . He also achieved a world best of the year in the half marathon in 1990 at the Great North Run in South Shields with 1:00:34 h and won the Tokyo half marathon twice (1992 and 1993). He also took part in a total of ten cross-country championships between 1985 and 2004 . His best placings were fourth in Stavanger in 1989 and sixth in Boston in 1992 .

He was Australian champion a total of four times: in 1987 in the 15 km road run, in 1988 in the 10,000 meter run, and in 1989 and 2003 in cross country .

Steve Moneghetti is 1.76 m tall and had a competition weight of 60 kg.
