The 13th Commonwealth Games took place from July 24th to August 2nd, 1986 in the Scottish capital Edinburgh .

163 competitions were held in badminton , bowls , boxing , weightlifting , athletics , cycling , wrestling , rowing , shooting and swimming (including diving ). 1662 athletes from 27 countries took part. The main competition site was Meadowbank Stadium .

Numerous Commonwealth members from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean boycotted the Games. They were protesting against the British government, which, in their opinion, was not adopting a strict attitude towards the apartheid regime in South Africa .
