The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were the sixth edition of the event now known as the Commonwealth Games . They took place from July 18-26, 1958 in the Welsh city of Cardiff .
Competitions were held in the sports of bowls , boxing , fencing , weightlifting , athletics , cycling , wrestling , rowing and swimming (including diving ). 1122 athletes from 35 countries took part. The main competition site was the Cardiff Arms Park . The Queen's Baton Relay , a relay modeled on the Olympic torch relay, was held for the first time.
The participation of South Africa aroused strong criticism because of the apartheid policy. The country left the Commonwealth of Nations in 1961 and did not participate in the Commonwealth Games again until 1994.
