The 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were the fifth edition of the event now known as the Commonwealth Games . They took place from July 30th to August 7th, 1954 in the Canadian city of Vancouver .
91 competitions were held in the fields of bowls , boxing , fencing , weightlifting , athletics , cycling , wrestling , rowing and swimming (including diving ). 662 athletes from 24 countries took part. The main competition site was the Empire Stadium .
The men's mile run, which went down in history as the “race of the century”, is the most sensational competition. The Englishman Roger Bannister beat the Australian world record holder John Landy , whereby both remained under the "magical" four-minute limit, which was long considered unattainable. It was also the first track and field event to be broadcast live on television worldwide.
