The 1970 British Commonwealth Games were the ninth edition of the event now known as the Commonwealth Games . They took place from July 16-25, 1970 in the Scottish capital Edinburgh .
121 competitions in badminton , bowls , boxing , fencing , athletics , cycling , wrestling , shooting and swimming (including diving ) were held. 1383 athletes from 42 countries took part. The main competition site was Meadowbank Stadium . The swimming competitions took place in the then newly built Royal Commonwealth Pool .
For the first time, metric units were used instead of the previously customary imperial system , and for the first time a target photo was used for tight decisions .
