South Shields is a port city in the South Tyneside district of the Metropolitan County of Tyne and Wear in North East England with a population of about 83,700.

The city has a seaport at the mouth of the Tyne in the North Sea . Industry includes the manufacture of machines, steel products and ships.

In 80 AD, the Roman base of Arbeia was built near South Shields, where an archaeological dig is now located. An altar with an inscription of the god Alator was found there . The modern city was founded in the 13th century.

South Shields is the headquarters of the Barbour textile company , which became known worldwide for its oilcloth jackets.
