Michael "Mike" Allen (born March 30, 1949 in South Shields ) is a retired English football player .

Career

Allen came in May 1966 from the Wallsend Boys to Middlesbrough FC and made his debut for the club on December 30, 1967 in the center-back position in a 2-1 defeat by Bolton Wanderers . In the following seasons Allen was used at Middlesbrough in a variety of positions (left and right full-back, left midfield), but never got beyond the status of supplementary player. In five seasons in the Second Division , he played a total of 35 league games when Middlesbrough placed in the top half of the table, but missed promotion to the First Division.

In October 1971 he moved to the Fourth Division for Brentford FC for a transfer of £ 10,000 and rose with the club at the end of the season in the Third Division , a success to which he had contributed with three goals in 30 missions. After the direct relegation Allen moved during the 1973/74 season from midfield to the left full-back position and was there as an undisputed regular player. With his straightforward and consistent style of play, he was a fixture in Brentford's squad for seven seasons and was named "Player of the Year" in the 1975/76 season when he missed just one of 53 games this season. In 1978, fourth in the table, he was promoted to the third division again, but Allen only played seven games at the start of the season and after 255 competitive appearances (13 goals), he left the club at the end of the season. His career was continued in the Northern Football League at Whitby Town . After retiring, Allen worked for Imperial Chemical Industries and lived in Marton .
