Career

Tranmere & Everton

Simonsen started his professional career in 1996 at Tranmere Rovers as a junior player. In November 1997 he made his league debut against Stoke City in the Football League First Division and was then a regular at Tranmere. In September 1998 he was signed by the first division club Everton for £ 3.3 million, the then record transfer fee for a British goalkeeper.

Although Simonsen was considered to be one of the greatest young hopes in England, he failed to establish himself in the Everton first team. In six seasons he only made 30 league appearances. He made his debut in the 1999/2000 season in two League Cup games against Oxford United, in which he could not convince. Under Walter Smith , who had brought him to Everton, he was temporarily a regular player in the 2001/02 season and completed 25 league games. After David Moyes was the new coach of the club in the summer of 2002 , Simonsen lost his regular seat to Richard Wright . He did not renew his contract, which expired in May 2004, and left Everton FC after six years.

Stoke City

He signed a one-year contract with the second division team Stoke City and immediately became a regular goalkeeper. At the end of his first season he was voted Player of the Season by his teammates and signed a new contract until 2008. In the 2006/07 season he set a club record when he went seven league games in a row without conceding a goal. At the end of the season he extended his contract to 2010. In 2008 he won the runner-up with Stoke City and thus rose to the Premier League. At the beginning of March he lost his place to Carlo Nash, on loan from Wigan Athletic .

Sheffield United

In July 2010, Steve Simonsen moved to Sheffield United in the second-rate Football League Championship 2010/11 .

Preston North End

After his contract in Sheffield was not renewed, he moved to Preston North End on August 17, 2012 .

National team

Simonsen was used a total of four times in the English U21 national team.
