history
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough South Shields, the Municipal Borough Jarrow and the Urban Districts Boldon and Hebburn were merged. These administrative units previously belonged to County Durham .
In 1986, South Tyneside became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. South Tyneside remained part of Tyne and Wear for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as fire fighting and public transport.
economy
South Tyneside used to be best known for its many shipyards . There were also coal mines and chemical industries. In the second half of the 20th century, most of the companies closed, similar to those in the Ruhr area . As a result, there was a high unemployment rate in the borough at the end of the 20th century. For some years now, however, the trend has been reversed and businesses are settling again, especially in the service sector .
traffic
The Motorway M1 , the Motorway M19 and other major highways linking South Tyneside with the rest of Britain . The Tyne & Wear Metro connects the borough with the rest of the Tyneside region, Sunderland and both the main train station and Newcastle upon Tyne International Airport . Two roads and a ferry link North and South Tyneside.
Others
The people of South Tyneside speak a local English dialect called 'Geordie'.
The most famous people from South Tyneside are arguably the former Prime Minister of New Zealand Sir William Fox and the film director Ridley Scott .
South-Tyneside is twin town of the French cities Épinay-sur-Seine and Noisy-le-Sec and the German city Wuppertal . Initial talks about a partnership were held with the city of Wuppertal as early as 1950, and the first youth exchange took place in 1951. Today, youth clubs regularly travel from South Tyneside to Wuppertal or vice versa.
