Hebburn is a small town on the south bank of the River Tyne in North East England , between Jarrow and Bill Quay . Hebburn has 18,808 inhabitants.

history

It is believed that the name Hebburn derives from the Anglo-Saxon terms heah (high) and byrgen (cemetery) - but it could also mean high-altitude place by the water . Hebburn is first mentioned in the 8th century as a fishing settlement that was burned down by a Viking raid. A regional tradition said until recently that a longship had been preserved on the south bank of the Tyne near Hebburn . The object visible at low tide turned out to be the remains of a wooden coal barge in 2007 .

In the 14th century, the country was ruled by a pele tower (watchtower). A 1.4 m high wall has been preserved at St. John's Church to this day. Sovereignty over the Hebburn manor was exercised by several families during the Middle Ages .

Site plan from 1909 (Hebburn Shipbuilding Yard)

Hebburn's best-known business was the Hawthorn, Leslie & Company shipyard , which emerged from the merger of the A. Leslie and Company shipyard in Hebburn with the locomotive manufacturer R. and W. Hawthorn from St. Peter's in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1870 . One of the most famous ships built by Hawthorn Leslie was the HMS  Kelly, launched in 1938 and commanded by Louis Mountbatten . The Hawthorn-Leslie parent shipyard in Hebburn was closed in 1982 and the remainder was sold to Cammell Laird . In 2001 it was sold on to the A&P Group , but has remained unused since then. The actual company remained in existence despite the loss of shipbuilding and focused on the telecommunications business. In March 1993, Vodafone bought the company and turned it into a mobile phone provider .
