Oleg Wassiljewitsch Schein ( Russian Олег Васильевич Шеин ; born March 21, 1972 in Astrakhan ) is a Russian politician, former member of the Duma and member of the Just Russia party . He ran for the office of mayor of his hometown Astrakhan in 2009, but was defeated by the candidate of United Russia , Sergei Boschenow . Schein is a history teacher by profession.

Schein graduated from middle school number 15 in Astrakhan (today Technical Lyceum) with a gold medal. After school he started studying history at the Astrakhan Pedagogical Institute. In 1989 he joined the United Front of the Working People of Russia and carried out the first protests against the policies of Gorbachev and Yeltsin . In 1992 he was elected to the executive body of the VFW. In 1993 in Moscow he took part in the events on the side of the House of Councils.

From 1994 to 1995 Schein worked as a history teacher in the village of Tri Protoka.

Schein led the working group to review the results of the privatization, which recommended that the head of the area committee on property be dismissed. He also drafted a number of legislative projects, took part in court cases over non-payment of wages and child benefits, and organized the movement of those duped in the financial pyramids . In 1995, on his initiative, the Defense Union was formed and in 1996 he was elected co-chair. In the course of a year the union staged 46 strikes, most of which resulted in the wages being paid out to the strikers.

In March 2004, he won the Astrakhan Area Representative Assembly's deputy elections against 10 fellow candidates, but the elections were not counted because the turnout was too low. In October of that year he won in the same constituency. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Economic Policy, Environmental Use and Resource Commission of the Astrakhan Region Duma.

Before joining Just Russia, Schein was a member of the Rodina party .

Mayoral elections 2009

Schein, at that time still a member of the State Duma, ran for the mayoral elections in 2009, which took place on October 10, 2009. His opponent was Sergei Boschenow from the United Russia party . Boschenow won according to official information; However, due to the numerous fraudulent elections, there were vigorous protests. The elections in Astrakhan were the most controversial in all of Russia in the October 2009 election, on a par with the mayoral elections of Derbent . Oleg Schein was able to gather several hundred to 2000 people at three demonstrations; however, the protests had no effect.

Mayoral elections 2012

After the previous mayor of Astrakhan, Sergei Boschenov, was appointed governor of Volgograd Oblast, mayoral elections were held in Astrakhan on March 4 at the same time as the presidential elections. Schein was a candidate and competed against the interim mayor Mikhail Stolyarov. According to official information, he was defeated by only 30% of the votes. Immediately after the elections, the election commissions were accused of numerous irregularities and falsifications; The materials from the web cameras installed in all polling stations were used as evidence. In March 2012, Schein went on a hunger strike after the criminal authorities refused to investigate .

On April 9, 2012, the well-known blogger Alexei Navalny called for a trip to Astrakhan to support Schein in his fight for a fair mayoral election. In addition to Navalny, the young politician Ilya Yashin, the journalist Sergei Parchomenko and the TV star Ksenija Sobachak also traveled.

After 40 days (he lost 14 of his previously 78 kg) he ended the hunger strike. The time wrote:
