history
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Tynemouth, Borough Wallsend, part of Borough Whitley Bay, Urban District Longbenton and part of Urban District Seaton Valley were merged. These local authorities were previously part of Northumberland County .
In 1986, North Tyneside became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. North Tyneside remained part of Tyne and Wear for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as fire fighting and public transport.
In May 1997 opened Elizabeth II. Solemnly semiconductor plant of Siemens AG in Cobalt Business Park North Tyneside. It was one of the largest foreign investments in British history at the time, at £ 1.1 billion. After massive losses in the company's semiconductor division, which was later spun off as Infineon , Siemens decided to close the plant in September 1998 after only 15 months of operation. 1100 employees were affected by the closure of the site.
In September 2000 the Atmel company took over the location. Atmel announced in December 2006 that it wanted to give up the location. In autumn 2007 the location was then sold to Highbridge Business Park . The equipment for the semiconductor plant designed for 200 mm wafers was sold to TSMC. Atmel generated $ 124 million in both sales. In January 2009 the buildings were demolished.
In March 2015, Siemens Wind Service moved into the Cobalt Business Park with around 200 employees .
