Atmel Corporation (acronym for "advanced technology for memory and logic") was an American manufacturer of integrated circuits based in San José in the state of California .
history
Atmel has been developing and producing microcontrollers (e.g. the AVR family and further developed 8051 controllers with flash memory ), programmable logic circuits , non-volatile semiconductor memories , as well as mixed-signal and radio components since it was founded in 1984 . The products are marketed as standard products (commodities), application-specific standard products (ASSP) or application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC).
A takeover agreed in September 2015 by the German-British company Dialog Semiconductor for 4.6 billion US dollars was canceled in January 2016. The purchase price, criticized as too high, had been outbid by Microchip Technology . Atmel paid Dialog a contractual penalty of 137 million euros for failing to complete the takeover. Eventually, Microchip acquired Atmel in 2016 for $ 3.6 billion. The acquisition was completed in April 2016.
