Synopsys Inc. ( Nasdaq : SNPS) is a semiconductor design software ( EDA ), IP core , and design-for-manufacturing solutions company. Synopsys also offers services in these areas.

Synopsys was founded in 1986 by Aart de Geus under the name Optimal Solutions . The company was to develop and market synthesis technologies that were originally developed at General Electric . Synopsys was a pioneer in this field and has had a major impact on the application of these technologies. Synopsys designed function libraries for its synthesis tools that made it easier to design certain applications (e.g. the std.logic.arith for VHDL ). These function libraries are still widely used today, although there are now equivalent standard libraries.

In the meantime, Synopsy's activities have expanded to include the entire design flow, that is, the products cover the entire area from design to verification, subsequent use by IP, to the interface for the manufacture of ASICs and FPGAs .
