Walgreens Boots Alliance (formerly Walgreen Co. ), based in Deerfield , Illinois , is the largest US pharmacy chain. The listed company is the result of the merger of Walgreens with Alliance Boots in 2015.

The company, which was newly formed in 2015 after the merger between Walgreens and Boot Alliance, has an annual turnover of more than 130 billion US dollars. 180,000 pharmacies with over 370 distribution centers in 20 countries are supplied; around 12,400 pharmacies are operated by the group itself. Stefano Pessina is the largest single shareholder in the new company with 16 percent.

In 2016, the company had 8,175 sales locations in the United States and Puerto Rico . Over 2,000 of these stores are open around the clock. A typical Walgreens store employs between 25 and 30 people. In addition to the pharmaceutical sector , there is a photo sector , a cosmetics department and a general sales area for products . Walgreens was founded by Charles Rudolph Walgreen (1873-1939), who in 1901 opened a first store in Chicago , Illinois. In 2006 Walgreens took over the American company Happy Harry's . On April 9, 2010, the drugstore chain Duane Reade , based in Midtown Manhattan, was acquired for $ 623 million.

In August 2014 Walgreens took over the British-Swiss competitor Alliance Boots completely. In February 2012, Walgreens took over 45 percent of the shares for 6.7 billion US dollars from the previous owners KKR and Stefano Pessina . Walgreens pays $ 5.29 billion for the remaining shares.

Walgreens bought approximately 2,200 stores from competitor Rite Aid in 2017 for $ 4.4 billion, taking over 40% of Rite Aid's businesses. A complete takeover of the competitor had previously failed due to resistance from regulators.

Stock exchange listing

Walgreens Boots Alliance is listed on NASDAQ and is included in the S&P 500 , S&P 100 and NASDAQ 100 indices . In June 2018, the company ousted long-time index member General Electric from the Dow Jones . In the Forbes Global 2000 of the world's largest companies, Walgreens Boots Alliance ranks 124th (as of fiscal year 2017). The company had a market value of around USD 64 billion in mid-2018.
