Capital One Financial Corp. is a US company based in McLean . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index.

The company offers various types of financial services to its customers. The company was founded in 1988 by Richard Fairbank and Nigel Morris.

In the Forbes Global 2000 of the world's largest companies, Capital One ranks 130th in 2019 with a stock market value of USD 41.2 billion. The company had a market value of over USD 45 billion in mid-2018.

On April 29, 2019, US President Donald Trump and members of his family and The Trump Organization filed an injunction against Capital One and Deutsche Bank to prevent their financial data from being disclosed to Senate committees that had passed Subpoena . According to its own statements to the court, Capital One did not have any tax documents from Donald Trump.

In July 2019, it was announced that a hacker had stolen data from over 100 million customers.

Acquisitions

In 2005, Capital One acquired the New Orleans-based Hibernia National Bank . In 2007 the North Fork Bank was acquired.

In 2011, Capital One acquired ING Direct USA from the Dutch ING Groep for a total of USD 9 billion . Capital One paid 6.2 billion USD in cash, for the remaining 2.8 billion ING receives 9.9% of the shares and thus rises to become the largest single shareholder, as well as a seat on the board.

On August 10, 2011 it was announced that Capital One would take over the credit card business of the British bank HSBC in the USA. The purchase price for the division is USD 2.6 billion. The acquisition was to be completed in May 2012.

Another takeover followed in 2015 with the acquisition of the Capital, Healthcare Financial Services division from General Electric .
