The company produces and sells electricity to its customers in the US states of Alabama , Georgia , Florida and Mississippi .

Subsidiaries and investments

In 1995 Southern Company acquired the British South Western Electricity Board (SWEB). For the first time, a US utility company acquired a foreign, private energy company. SWEB was sold in 2003 by Southern Company to the French energy company EDF Energy .
