AEP owns and operates the Donald Cook Nuclear Power Plant in the southwest corner of the US state of Michigan , on the shores of Lake Michigan near the Indiana border. However, the majority of production is done by a large number of coal-fired power plants . Because of the emissions from these power plants, the company is the target of criticism from environmental groups.

AEP also owns many of the properties in the city of Cheshire, Ohio.

AEP is also one of the leading technology companies in the energy sector and is working on a low-emission coal-fired power plant. By supporting the Pickens Plan, which provides for an expansion of wind energy in America, the company wants to participate in sustainable electricity generation.
