Alaska Air Group is a US holding company based in SeaTac , Washington state . It owns two certified airlines that primarily operate in the United States: Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air . The Alaska Air Group also oversees the aircraft handling company McGee Air Services , which is 100% owned by Alaska Airlines.

With Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, the Alaska Air Group serves the passenger and cargo markets in the Pacific Northwest via the international airports Seattle-Tacoma and Portland as well as the state of Alaska via the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport with its extensive route network . With the acquisition of Virgin America in 2016, the business expanded significantly.

The company has been part of the Dow Jones Transportation Average since 2011 after the AMR Corporation filed for bankruptcy.

history

The holding was created in 1985 from Jet America Airlines and Horizon Air. Jet America Airlines merged with Alaska Airlines in 1987.

On April 4, 2016, Alaska Air Group announced plans to acquire Virgin America that were pending approval by U.S. regulators and Virgin America shareholders before the acquisition was completed on December 14, 2016. The total price for the acquisition was approximately $ 2.6 billion. Until 2018, Alaska Air Group continued to operate Alaska Airlines and Virgin America as separate airlines.

On March 22, 2017, the company announced that Alaska Air Group would merge Virgin America and Alaska Airlines into a combined airline under the Alaska Airlines brand. The merger was largely completed on April 25, 2018, and the Virgin America brand ceased to exist on June 2, 2019.
