The Portland International Airport ( IATA : PDX , ICAO : KPDX ) is an international commercial airport in the northeast of the city of Portland and the largest airport in the State of Oregon . The airport has existed since 1940 and has three runways .
Location and transport links
Portland International Airport is seven miles northeast of downtown Portland on the Columbia River . The centrally located passenger terminal has its own junction on Interstate 205, which runs east of the airport . The US Highway 30 bypass also runs near the cargo area and the Oregon Air National Guard base at the south end of the airport site .
The Portland International Airport is by rail in the public transport involved. The Trimet MAX Red Line connects the airport with central Portland.

Portland International Airport has a total area of 1,214 acres.
Runways
Portland International Airport has three runways . The longest runway is 10R / 28L, is 3353 meters long and 46 meters wide. The parallel runway 10L / 28R is 2995 meters long and also 46 meters wide. The cross wind runway 03/21 is 1829 meters long, 46 meters wide and crosses the runway 10R / 28L. The runway 10R / 28L has a concrete pavement, while the other two runways are paved with asphalt.
Passenger terminals
Portland International Airport has a passenger terminal , which is divided into five concourses with the designations A to E. The terminal has a total of 60 gates . Concourses A to C form the southern part of the terminal, while Concourses D and E form the northern part.
Concourse A
Concourse A has twelve piers with the designations A1 to A12. They are used by regional aircraft and have no boarding bridges .
Concourse B
Concourse B consists of three piers labeled B1 to B3, all of which are equipped with passenger boarding bridges.
Concourse C
Concourse C consists of 23 piers with the designations C1 to C23, all of which are also equipped with passenger boarding bridges.
Concourse D
Concourse D consists of 15 gates with the designations D1 to D15, here too all gates have passenger boarding bridges.
Concourse E
Concourse E consists of seven piers with the designations E1 to E7. Except for gate E7, which is used for handling regional aircraft, all gates are equipped with passenger boarding bridges.
Airlines and Destinations
Portland International Airport is used by a total of 16 airlines . It serves as a hub for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air . The airlines American Airlines , Delta Air Lines , SkyWest Airlines , Southwest Airlines and United Airlines also have larger market shares. The cargo airline Ameriflight also operates a hub in Portland.
A total of 62 national and 11 international destinations are served non-stop from Portland International Airport . Most of the main national flight destinations are in the western United States. There are also international connections to Amsterdam , London – Heathrow , Tokyo and to destinations in Canada and Mexico. Until 2009 the airport was also served by Lufthansa . Since June 2015 Condor Flugdienst has been serving Portland again with direct flights to and from Frankfurt am Main , but only during the summer flight schedule.

Incidents
- On October 1, 1966, a Douglas DC- 9-14 of the West Coast Airlines ( aircraft registration number N9101 ) flew into a ridge while approaching Portland (Oregon) Airport. In this CFIT ( Controlled Flight into Terrain ) all 18 occupants were killed. This was the first total loss of a DC-9.
- On December 28, 1978 fell Douglas DC-8-61 of United Airlines (Mark N8082U ) on United Airlines Flight 173 about 11 kilometers (six nautical miles) from the airport in a traversed by forest outskirts in northeast Portland from. The machine ran out of fuel because it was in waiting for around an hour, during which the cockpit crew dealt with alleged landing gear problems that had occurred before landing. Ten of the 189 occupants (179 passengers, ten crew members) were killed (eight passengers, the flight engineer and a stewardess).
