The Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport ( IATA code : MFR , ICAO code : KMFR ) is the commercial airport of the American small town Medford in the US state of Oregon .

Location and transport links

Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport is three miles north of downtown Medford . The Interstate 5 runs west of the airport, while the Oregon Route 62 east runs the airport.

The Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport is integrated into the local public transport by buses . The RVTD Route 61 drives the passenger terminal regularly.

history

In 1922, the City of Medford and Jackson County bought Newell Barber Field, which was renamed Medford Field . This was acquired for use by the Air Patrol of the United States Forest Service . From 1926 Pacific Air Transport became the first airline to fly to Medford. In 1928 the location for a new airport was selected.

In October 1929 a runway was completed at the current location. The airport officially opened on August 4, 1930 as Medford Municipal Airport . In the 1930s, a cross wind runway was built and the existing runway was expanded. The United States Department of War took control of the airport during World War II .

In 1949 the air rescue organization Mercy Flights was founded, which still uses the airport today. In 1958 the United States Forest Service set up a base for fire fighting aircraft . In 1968 funds were made available to set up approach lights and an instrument landing system. In addition, further improvements were made to runway 14/32. In January 1971, a majority of voters voted to move the airport from Medford City to Jackson County . This was done in April 1971.

In October 1994 the United States Customs Service opened an office at the airport. The first international shipment was handled in December 1994, the first international passenger flight, a private jet from Canada , followed in March 1994. In September 1995 a Foreign Trade Zone was set up at the airport, and in the same year the airport in Rogue Valley International – Medford Airport renamed. From 1999 to 2000 the runway was expanded by around 640 meters. In January 2003, the United States Customs Service closed the airport office.

On June 16, 2008, construction of a new control tower began . A new passenger terminal was opened on January 3, 2009. However, the first flight was not dispatched until January 11, 2009. On May 5, 2009, the inauguration of the new control tower followed. In 2010, construction began on two new freight halls, which were completed in autumn of next year. In 2014, a Very Large Air Tanker Base was set up, which enables the airport to be used by McDonnell Douglas DC-10 fire-fighting aircraft .

Rogue Valley International – Medford Airport has one runway . Runway 14/32 is 2682 meters long and 46 meters wide, and the surface is made of asphalt.

Closed runway

Until 2010 the airport had a cross wind runway with the identification 09/27. It was 956 meters long, 30 meters wide and also covered with asphalt. The remaining section of the runway 09/27 is now used as a taxiway.

Rogue Valley International – Medford Airport has a passenger terminal . This was opened on January 3, 2009, but the first flight was not processed until January 11, 2009. The passenger terminal has a floor area of ​​around 7154 square meters, spread over two floors. So far, only one gate has been equipped with a passenger boarding bridge . There are 13 parking positions on the apron of the terminal . Three positions are suitable for aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737-900 , the remaining parking positions can only be used by regional aircraft.

The Rogue Valley International – Medford Airport is used by the airlines Allegiant Air , American Eagle , Delta Connection , Horizon Air and United Airlines / United Express . In addition, the airport is used by the cargo airlines Ameriflight and Empire Airlines . Empire Airlines flies to the airport exclusively on behalf of FedEx , while Ameriflight flies to the airport on behalf of United Parcel Service and other customers.

There are nine destinations in the United States , including the hubs of the individual airlines.
