The Estadio Defensores del Chaco ( German Defender of the Chaco Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Paraguayan capital Asunción . It was opened in 1917 and today has a seating capacity of 42,354 spectators. It is the largest stadium in Paraguay. Currently it is mainly used by the Paraguayan national soccer team .
history
The stadium was opened in 1917 as the Estadio de Puerto Sajonia ( German Port Sajonia Stadium ) because it is located in Sajonia - a suburb of Asunción. Later it was renamed to its present name, Estadio Defensores del Chaco to introduce the Chaco War to honor some soldiers taken. In 2002, the capacity shrank from 50,000 to 42,354 spectators after all standing room was converted into seating. In 2006 a museum was opened in the stadium, which deals with football in Paraguay.
Over time, the stadium has hosted both the Copa Sudamericana and six Copa Libertadores . Furthermore, the Copa America in 1979 and 1999 and the U-20 Sudamericano in 2007 were held here.
