The Semiconductor Dialog plc. is a fabless manufacturer of application-specific integrated mixed-signal circuits with operational headquarters in Reading, UK, and administrative headquarters in Kirchheim unter Teck . The company's products are mainly used in the multimedia and radio sectors. In recent years, the company has specialized in the mobile communications and automotive sectors.
history
In 1981, International Microelectronic Products Inc. (IMP), based in Silicon Valley in the USA, a supplier of CMOS semiconductors, entered the European business. In 1986 the European business was transferred to a separate company called IMP Europe. Shortly thereafter, the company was taken over by Daimler-Benz AG, which IMP Europe incorporated into what was then the subsidiary Temic - Telefunken Microelectronic. Dialog Semiconductor was created in 1990 through a management buy-out financed by the financial investor Apax Partners and the telecommunications group Ericsson . In 1992 this company was again taken over by Temic Telefunken. In 1998 Temic Telefunken was split up and Dialog Semiconductor became independent again.
In 1999, Dialog Semiconductor went public in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and on September 21, 2009 was admitted to the TecDax .
Dialog Semiconductor acquired SiTel, a supplier of semiconductors for wireless devices, in 2011 and the US company iWatt, a supplier of power supply components and LED technology, for $ 345 million in 2013.
A "merger of equals" planned in 2014 with the Austrian semiconductor manufacturer ams failed.
A takeover of US competitor Atmel for $ 4.6 billion agreed in September 2015 was canceled in January 2016. The purchase price, criticized as too high, had been outbid by Microchip Technology . In 2016, Atmel had to pay Dialog a contractual penalty of 137 million euros for failing to complete the takeover. The acquisition of Atmel should reduce the dependency on the most important customer Apple with an (estimated) share of 78% of the turnover to 40%.
On October 11, 2018, it was announced that Apple would acquire parts of Dialog Semiconductor's businesses and patent licenses for approximately $ 300 million, including 300 Dialog engineers and other employees. Including employees from Great Britain and Italy as well as from the German branches in Nabern and Neuaubing.
In October 2019, Dialog Semiconductor announced that it would take over the semiconductor manufacturer Creative Chips, adding expertise in the area of Industrial Internet of Things .
At the beginning of March 2020, Dialog Semiconductor was surprisingly ousted from the MDax .
