Joan Gardy Artigas , actually Joan Llorens i Gardy , (born June 18, 1938 in Boulogne-Billancourt , Seine-et-Oise department in France) is a Spanish painter , sculptor and ceramicist . He became known for his collaboration with Joan Miró .

life and work

Gardy Artigas was born to Josep Llorens i Artigas , a well-known ceramist and friend of Joan Miró. In 1958 he began studying at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris . In 1959 he met Alberto Giacometti , who encouraged him to open his own ceramic workshop in Paris, where he worked for Georges Braque and Marc Chagall . In 1960, in addition to running his workshop, he began to design his own sculptures. For Miró, together with his father, he made the monumental ceramic wall for the UNESCO building in Paris. Then Miro asked him to come back to Catalonia to carry out further orders in his father's workshop in El Raco in Gallifa , a city northwest of Barcelona .

This cooperation resulted in ceramic wall paintings for Harvard University , the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence , for the Barcelona Airport , the Kunsthaus Zürich , the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen, the IBM building in Barcelona and for the Palais des Expositions et des Congrès de Madrid . 1981 to 1982 he and Miró made the 22 m high ceramic fountain Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird) for the Parc de Joan Miró in Barcelona. With Gardy Artiga's help, a mosaic by Antoni Tàpies was created in 1982 for Plaça de Catalunya in Sant Boi de Llobregat , for which Tàpies received the gold medal of the Catalonia region. In 1990 he created Tiled Fountain for London , a 5 × 10 m fountain system that he designed himself and consists of hand-painted, glazed, ceramic and can be seen on the corner of Primrose Street and Appold Street.

In 1989 - in memory of his father - he founded the Fundació Josep Tallers Llorens Artigas at the traditional location in El Raco in Gallifa, where artists from all over the world can still work for up to six months. The workshop has been visited by many well-known artists who had Gardy Artigas carry out their designs. The special feature of the kilns in El Raco is the Japanese-style heating with wood; Ash particles on the glaze create a special effect. Gardy Artigas is a member of the board of directors of the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.
