description

The couple Marguerite and Aimé Maeght established the foundation in 1964 to exhibit part of their collection there. The Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert , in collaboration with well-known artists such as Joan Miró and Georges Braque, created a building ensemble consisting of two houses separated by a courtyard and the small St. Bernard chapel , which commemorates his son Bernard, who died early in 1953. The ensemble fits harmoniously into the Mediterranean landscape. The opening took place on July 28, 1964 by the then Minister of Culture of France, André Malraux .
