Raoul Ubac
Raoul Ubac (born August 31, 1910 in Cologne , † March 24, 1985 in Dieudonné ) was a Belgian painter, photographer and sculptor.
Raoul Ubac (Rolf Ubach) spent his childhood in Cologne and Frankfurt, before the family moved to Malmedy, his mother's home, in 1919. In the late 1920s, Ubac roamed Europe on foot. In 1928 he stayed in Paris for the first time , where he met the painter Otto Freundlich . During a second stay in Paris in the early 1930s, he came into contact with representatives of surrealism . In 1933 he exhibited surrealist photographs and drawings for the first time. In 1934 he published a volume of poetry with photographs. He also began making graphics and drawing.
Ubac worked with poets such as Jean Lescure (1912-2005), Raymond Queneau , Paul Éluard and with André Frénaud , Yves Bonnefoy , Claude Esteban , whose works he illustrated. He took part in the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme , organized by André Breton and Paul Éluard , which took place in 1938 at the Beaux-Arts gallery in Paris. In the mid-1940s he gave up photography completely and now also paints. His style moved away from surrealism and became abstract. In 1959 Raoul Ubac was a participant in the documenta II in Kassel .
Ubac later also dealt with other art forms, such as church windows, wall mosaics and reliefs. He died in France in 1985, where he had lived much of his life.
