Yves Bonnefoy (born June 24, 1923 in Tours , † July 1, 2016 in Paris ) was a French poet , author , translator and university lecturer .

Life

Bonnefoy studied mathematics and philosophy in Tours, Poitiers and at the Sorbonne in Paris . After World War II , he studied art history and toured Europe and the United States . As early as 1944 he joined the surrealists , which particularly influenced his first work, Traité du pianiste , published in 1946 . In the same year he founded the magazine La Révolution, la Nuit . The volumes of poetry Douve in motion and motionless , Reign of Yesterday: Desert and Inscribed Stone , which were published in France between 1953 and 1965, date from the early days of his work . They are available in a German translation by Friedhelm Kemp , as is his volume of poems, Die gebogene Planken . In 1967 he started publishing the art and literary newspaper L'éphemère together with André du Bouchet , Gaëtan Picon and Louis-René des Forêts . His poems and essays on art, especially pictures, made him famous in the literary world of the 20th century. His work L'Arrière-Pays ("Das Hinterland" or The Land Beyond ) from 1972 occupies a special place among them.

Bonnefoy has taught literature at various universities in Europe and the United States, including Brandeis University , Waltham, Massachusetts (1962–64), Center Universitaire , Vincennes (1969–1970), Johns Hopkins University , Baltimore, Princeton University , New Jersey , Yale University , New Haven, Connecticut, University of Geneva , University of Nice (1973–1976), University of Provence , Aix (1979–1981) and, since 1986, the Graduate School of the City University of New York . After Roland Barthes' death in 1980, he was appointed to the chair of comparative literature at the Collège de France .

Bonnefoy's poetry is often difficult to access, and each individual poem can only be understood in relation to the overall work. "I do not write poems, insofar as the word poem denotes a self-contained, self-contained structure," said Bonnefoy in 1972. "What I write are rather entities , assemblies, contexts within which each individual text is only a fragment."

Bonnefoy was considered one of the most important French poets of his time. In addition, his translations into French, especially the various works of Shakespeare , including the sonnets, have received wide recognition. He has also published various books on art and art history, including Miró and Giacometti .

In 2001 he was accepted as an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

The film editor and director Mathilde Bonnefoy is his daughter.
