André du Bouchet

André du Bouchet (born March 7, 1924 in Paris , † April 19, 2001 in Truinas , Département Drôme ) was a French poet , translator and art critic .

Life

In 1941 he left France because of World War II and studied comparative literature in the United States at Amherst College and Harvard University . In 1948 he returned to France. His first volume of poetry, Air , was published in 1951.

Du Bouchet also translated foreign language literature into French . His translations of Paul Celan's poems were praised by him. Celan also translated a volume of poetry du Bouchets, Dans la chaleur vacante , into German . These translations were published in 1968 under the title Vakante Glut . In 2002 a bilingual edition of Du Bouchet's poems and notes was published by the Munich Lyrik Kabinett Foundation .
