Friedhelm Kemp

Friedhelm Kemp , pseudonym Friedrich Umbran (born December 11, 1914 in Cologne ; † March 3, 2011 in Munich ) was a German literary scholar , writer and translator .

Friedhelm Kemp was born in Cologne into a middle-class family and grew up in Aachen and Frankfurt. In 1938 he received his doctorate from the Romanist Karl Vossler in Munich . At the end of the war he was part of the Bavarian Freedom Campaign .

For sixty years, Kemp has made a name for himself as a translator and essayist . In addition to translations of poetry , his work includes mainly French poets (e.g. Charles Baudelaire , Maurice Scève , Saint-John Perse , Yves Bonnefoy , Philippe Jaccottet ), contributions to anthologies, literary works such as B. The European sonnet . Kemp published his poems under the pseudonym Friedrich Umbran.

Kemp was editor of the works of Clemens Brentano in the Hanser-Verlag and Else Lasker-Schülers in the Kösel-Verlag .
