Wolfgang Matz (literary scholar)

Wolfgang Matz (* 1955 in Berlin ) is a German literary scholar and translator.

Live and act

Wolfgang Matz studied musicology and philosophy at the universities in Berlin and Marburg. In 1985 he received his doctorate in Marburg on a topic on Ernst Bloch's philosophy of music. From 1987 to 1995 he lived in Poitiers ; he taught German language and literature at the University of Poitiers and worked as a literary translator. In 1992 he was awarded the Paul Celan Prize together with Elisabeth Edl . In 1994 he received - again together with Elisabeth Edl - the Petrarca translator award for the joint transmission of the Cahiers of Simone Weil and Julien Gracq's The Great Way. A hiker's diary .

Since 1995 Matz has been working as a publishing editor for Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich. He has published numerous essays on German and French literature and translations of French poetry and prose.

In May 2018, the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts elected him a full member. Matz lives and works in Munich.
