Sobolewo ( Russian Соболево , German  Warnien, Kreis Wehlau , Lithuanian Varniai ) is a small town in the Russian Oblast of Kaliningrad . It belongs to the local government unit Stadtkreis Tschernjachowsk in chernyakhovsky district .

Geographical location

Sobolewo is located on the north bank of the Pregel (Russian: Pregolja) 25 kilometers west of the Rajon city of Tschernjachowsk (Insterburg) . Municipal road 27K-163 runs through the village from Sirenjewka (Siemohnen) via Gluschkowo (Plibischken) to federal road A216 (also European route 77 , formerly Reichsstrasse 138 ) near Talpaki (Taplacken) . The next train station is Meschduretschje on the Kaliningrad – Chernyshevskoje railway line (Königsberg – Eydtkuhnen / Eydtkau) - the former Prussian Eastern Railway - for onward travel to Lithuania and the Russian heartland.

Until 1946 Warnien consisted of several smaller courtyards. His first documentary mention experienced the place in 1410. Between 1874 and 1945 Warnien was in the District Plibischken (Russian Today: Gluschkowo) incorporated, which for Wehlau circle in the administrative district of Konigsberg the Prussian province of East Prussia belonged. On December 1, 1910, Warnien with the districts of Klein Warnien and Warnienhof (Russian: Belinskoje, both places no longer exist) counted a total of 130 inhabitants. Their number was 124 in 1933 and 117 in 1939.

In 1945 Warnien came to the Soviet Union as a result of the war with northern East Prussia . In 1950 the place was given the Russian name "Sobolewo" and was assigned to the village soviet Kamenski selski Sowet in Chernyakhovsk Raion . From 2008 to 2015 Sobolewo belonged to the rural municipality of Kamenskoye selskoje posselenije and since then to the city district of Chernyakhovsk.

With its mostly Protestant inhabitants, Warnien was parish before 1945 in the parish of the church Plibischken (today Russian: Gluschkowo) and belonged to the church district Wehlau in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . The last German clergyman before 1945 was Pastor Erich Woronowicz . Today Sobolewo is in the catchment area of the newly emerged in the 1990s Lutheran parish in Meschduretschje (Norkitten) , a branch of parish church region Chernyakhovsk (Kaliningrad) in the provost Kaliningrad of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia .
