Saalau Castle

The castle, probably laid out by the Teutonic Order in wood and earth construction, was already in use in 1355. From 1390 it was built in stone. In 1525, after secularization, the building was left to the former canons for their livelihood, after which the castle area became a domain. The castle was one of the smaller order castles with only one wing. In ducal times the castle was a chamber office. The ruins of the castle are still there today.

church

Church building

The Saalau church is a rectangular hall building from 1734 with a belfry standing to one side. During the Seven Years' War , Russian troops used the church and the rectory as a hospital, then both buildings, the school and numerous houses burned down when they left. The church building was rebuilt by 1760, with two galleries being moved.

The church came unscathed by World War II . Since 1988 it has served as a cultural center, a discotheque and a cinema. The windows were partially walled up, the roof covered with asbestos sheets.

Parish

Already in the pre-Reformation period there was a parish in Saalau, which was probably founded at the end of the 14th century and initially used the castle chapel as a place of worship. A Lutheran clergyman was already in office here before 1540 . The parish of Saalau counted 3,000 parishioners in 1925 and until 1945 belonged to the church district Insterburg in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union .

Today Kamenskoye is located in the catchment area of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Chernyakhovsk (Insterburg) , which was newly established in the 1990s . There is the central parish office for the church region of Chernyakhovsk , which encompasses more than 20 towns and is incorporated into the Kaliningrad provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia .
