The Dona i Ocell sculpture in Barcelona

Dona i Ocell ( Catalan for " woman and bird ") is a sculpture by the Spanish - Catalan artist Joan Miró , which he created in collaboration with the Spanish ceramist Joan Gardy Artigas . The 22 meter high sculpture is in Miró's native city of Barcelona .

description

The largest part of the sculpture was made up of a vertically positioned body with an elongated recess and another round recess at the top. The surface of the body was designed by Miró's partner Artigas as a Trencadís mosaic , which consists of fragments of ceramic tiles . The predominant colors are yellow, red, blue and green, while black fragments were used to emphasize the recesses. Laterally offset to the central axis of the body, there is a cylindrical, hollow attachment in the upper part of the sculpture, which is designed from the outside in the same way as the part of the sculpture below. On top of this attachment there is a curved, yellow body that forms the tip of the sculpture. The entire sculpture stands in a water basin.

interpretation

With the title Woman and Bird, the sculpture contains two recurring motifs in Miró's artistic work. His bronze statue La carícia d'un ocell (“The caress of a bird”) deals with a comparable subject . Accordingly, the lower, larger part of the sculpture represents the body of a woman, while the yellow body at the top of the sculpture is reminiscent of the eponymous bird. At the same time, the sculpture enables an erotic interpretation of the title and the representation. The word Ocell for bird is also a slang term for the male member . In addition, the lower part of the sculpture has a phallic shape , while the central recess is reminiscent of the female vulva . This form of representation of male and female sexual organs is already known from the Roman Empire as a symbol of strength and fertility .

Location

The sculpture is part of a three-part series of works of art that Miró created to welcome visitors to Barcelona. The three works are aimed at visitors who come to the city by plane, ship or overland, with Dona i Ocell welcoming the latter guests to Barcelona. The sculpture is located in Parc de Joan Miró, which was built on the site of a slaughterhouse and is now dominated by the sculpture Dona i Ocell. At the official inauguration of the sculpture in 1983, Miró was unable to attend due to his deteriorating health, and the artist died shortly after the inauguration in Palma .
