founding

The center was founded on July 17th, 2008 on the initiative of the university lecturers Manfred Brocker, Karlfriedrich Herb, Clemens Kauffmann and Barbara Zehnpfennig . According to his own statement, the intention was to put the basic idea of the Bavarian “Innovation Alliance 2008” in the field of political science into practice.

An important motivation for the establishment was the networking of the complementary specialist orientation of the participating university locations for the purpose of joint research and teaching in the fields of political theory , political philosophy and the history of political ideas . With the Center for Political Theory, the participating Bavarian universities - in the opinion of its board of directors - have a unique selling point in the German-speaking university landscape.

activity

tasks and goals

In addition to the fundamental intention of expanding and strengthening research and teaching skills through inter-university networking, the task of the center lies primarily in the following areas: coordinating research projects, strengthening interdisciplinarity , intensifying communication between political science, practical politics, business and society , Promotion of the scientific exchange, on the one hand between university professors and on the other hand with doctoral students within the common subject, as well as establishment of inter-university courses (especially at the master’s level) in the field of political theory .

activities

As part of this task, the center has, for example, repeatedly organized academic lectures and lecture series at the participating universities in recent years and regularly serves as an umbrella organization for cross-university courses. In addition, it has its own doctoral college. The center also organizes scientific conferences in the field of political theory.

PhD college

The center originally emerged from a joint doctoral program of the universities participating in the center, which was set up in 2006 and can be seen as the “institutional further development” of this group. The “Bavarian Doctoral College for Political Theory” pursues the idea of making the promotion of young academics in this political science sub-subject the subject of a structured doctoral program.

The aim is to ensure a "demanding and high-quality training for doctoral candidates with a high level of supervision and close research ties" in the long term.

The organization of the college is largely in the hands of the doctoral students, the participating university professors jointly hold the scientific management. Since 2006, the doctoral college has been holding conferences several times a year, with the support of various sponsors.
