Manfred Brocker

Manfred Brocker (* 1959 ) is a German political scientist . Since 2005 he has held the chair for political theory and philosophy at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

Career

From 1979 Brocker studied philosophy, German and Romance philology at the RWTH Aachen and the University of Cologne . In 1986 he completed this course with a Magister Artium . At the same time he studied economics and political science at the University of Cologne in 1982–84 and 1989–92. From 1986 to 1990 a first doctoral degree in political philosophy followed , with study phases in Cologne and Oxford (1988/89), supported by a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. His studies ended Brocker 1990 with the graduation to the Dr. phil. (Philosophy) and in 1992 with a degree in economics . In 1993 a further doctorate to Dr. rer. pole. in political science. For his dissertation "Work and Property" he received the 1991 award from the University of Cologne.

From 1994 to 2002 Brocker worked as a research assistant at the Department of Political Science in Cologne. After a stay abroad at the University of Yale in Connecticut, USA (1997/98) , he qualified as a professor in 2002 in political science with a paper on Christian rights in the USA. In 2002/03 he was a Fellow at the Research Institute for Philosophy in Hanover and represented the Chair of Political Theory at the University of Mannheim . From 2003 to 2004 he represented the Chair of Political Theory and Philosophy at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute of the LMU Munich.

Since 2005 Brocker has held the Chair of Political Science II (Political Theory and Philosophy) at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . From 2007 to 2015 he was also Professor at the University of Politics in Munich and from 2009 to 2010 Visiting Fellow at the Institute for International and Regional Studies at Princeton University , New Jersey, USA. Between 2012 and 2014 he held the position of Vice President for Research and Young Scientists at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . From 2014 to 2016 he was a member of the Collegium Helveticum at the University of Basel , Switzerland.

Work areas

The main focus of Manfred Brocker's academic work is in the field of political theory and philosophy, whereby he deals in particular with western political thinking of modern times (17th - 20th centuries). Another important focus of his research is the relationship between politics and religion on the one hand and politics and society in the USA on the other.

In 2000 he was co-founder and until 2006 spokesman of the working group "Politics and Religion" of the German Association for Political Science (DVPW). In 2008 Brocker co-founded the Bavarian Center for Political Theory (BayPol) and has been a member of its board since then. He is actively involved in the centre's doctoral program and is part of its scientific management. Brocker is also a member of the German Association for Political Science (DVPW), the German Society for Political Science (DGfP) and the German Society for Research into Political Thought (DGEPD). From 2012 to 2020 he was also co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Politik , Munich.
