Karlfriedrich Herb

Karlfriedrich Herb (born January 6, 1957 in Viersen ) is a German philosopher and political scientist . Since 2001 he has held the chair for political philosophy and the history of ideas at the political science institute of the University of Regensburg .

Career

Herb studied philosophy, comparative religious studies and psychology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn and was established in 1986 with a dissertation on the political philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau doctorate .

After various research projects and a stay at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris , he completed his habilitation in 1997 with a thesis on the modern concept of freedom at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he also worked as a research assistant . He then taught there as a private lecturer . Since then, Herb has held visiting professorships, including a. in Brasília , Recife , Campinas and São Paulo , and was appointed endowed professor for philosophy at Ulm University in 2001. He also teaches at the University of Politics and the University of Philosophy in Munich.

Work areas

The focus of his academic work lies in the field of modern political philosophy. The focus is on the history of ideas in contract theory , the emergence of the modern concept of citizenship and the philosophy of the Enlightenment . He is particularly interested in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau , to whose research he made important contributions. He is also dedicated to political anthropology and questions of political and moral responsibility in business and society.

In 2008, Herb was involved in founding the Bavarian Center for Political Theory (BayPol) and has been a board member ever since. Since 2011 he has acted as spokesman for the board. In addition, Herb is responsible for the scientific management of the centre's doctoral program together with other participating university professors.
