Gateshead is a metropolitan borough in Metropolitan County Tyne and Wear in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Gateshead . Other significant places in the district are Blaydon , Dunston , Felling , Rowlands Gill , Ryton and Whickham .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The county borough Gateshead, the urban districts Blaydon, Felling and Ryton and part of the rural district Chester-le-Street were merged. These local authorities were previously part of County Durham .
In 1986 Gateshead became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Gateshead remained part of Tyne and Wear for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as fire brigade and public transport.
