Tynemouth is a city in the north of England in the Tyne and Wear region . The city owes its name to the fact that the river Tyne flows into the North Sea here . Neighboring cities include North Shields and Whitley Bay .
The city is a popular destination, not least because of its beautiful sandy beaches, and particularly on weekends and public holidays, it attracts large numbers of visitors from Newcastle and Gateshead , some 13 km away , which are connected to Tynemouth by the yellow line of the Tyne & Wear Metro . In summer there are also some festivals here, including the Mouth of the Tyne Festival, which has been held since 2005 .
