Gilbert Laws was in 1908 in London at the Olympic Games in the 6-meter class Olympic champion . He was the skipper of the Dormy he designed , whose crew consisted of Charles Crichton and ship owner Thomas McMeekin . With two victories in the first two races, the overall victory was already certain ahead of time, as the best placement, including the number, was decisive for the placement. In the third race, the Dormy came third and finally finished the regatta in first place in front of the allot of Léon Huybrechts and the Guyoni of Henri Arthus .

Law's father was a shipbroker . He himself founded the Burnham Boat Building Company in Burnham-on-Crouch in 1893 , which quickly became one of the most successful boat manufacturers in the country. During the First World War he was called up to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and served in the Mediterranean. In early 1918 his health deteriorated and a year later he died in an officer nursing home on the Isle of Wight .
