Benjamin Paredes
Benjamín Paredes ( Benjamin Vencar Paredes Martínez ; born April 30, 1962 in Ecatepec de Morelos ) is a retired Mexican long-distance runner who specializes in marathon distance .
Life
His first major successes he achieved in 1993 with his victories at the Maratón de la Comarca Lagunera and the marathon of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Ponce . In 1994 he finished third in the Rotterdam Marathon . However, it did not receive international attention until the New York City Marathon of the same year. The race took a strange turn when his friend and training partner Germán Silva, while in the lead, was misdirected a good kilometer from the finish and had to take a detour. Paredes was able to take the lead in the meantime, but was overtaken by Silva in the end and finished the race in second.
At the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in 1995 , Paredes won the marathon. In 1996 he finished eighth at the Olympic Games in Atlanta . In 2000 he won again at the Maratón de la Comarca Lagunera, but reached only 64th place at the Olympic Games in Sydney . The marathon of the World Athletics Championships 2001 in Edmonton, he finished 19th in 2001 and 2003 he was second in the Comarca Lagunera.
Benjamín Paredes is 1.62 m tall and weighed 50 kg at competition times.
