The women's 4 x 100 meter relay at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 8 and 9, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

World Champions were the United States in the occupation Chryste Gaines , Marion Jones , Inger Miller and Gail Devers .
Second place went to Jamaica ( Beverly McDonald , Merlene Frazer , Juliet Cuthbert , Beverly Grant ).
Bronze went to France with Patricia Girard (final), Christine Arron . Delphine Combe and Sylviane Félix as well as Frédérique Bangué, who was also used in the run-up .

Frédérique Bangué, who was only used in the preliminary run in the French relay, also received a bronze medal. The national record, however, was only available to the athletes who actually ran.

Record improvement

The United States' world championship relay improved the existing World Cup record with Chryste Gaines , Marion Jones , Inger Miller and Gail Devers in the final on August 9 by two hundredths of a second to 41.47 s.

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
