The men's hammer throw at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 2 and 3, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
The German European Championship third from 1994 , Heinz Weis, became world champion . He won ahead of Andrij Skwaruk from Ukraine . Bronze went to the Russian European Champion from 1994, Vasily Sidorenko .
The final turned out to be very exciting. After the first two rounds, Wassili Sidorenko was leading in front of Hungary's Balázs Kiss and Heinz Weis. In the third attempt, Weis took the lead with the competition's first 80-meter throw. But Sidorenko was also able to improve to 79.80 m. In rounds four and five, Sidorenko replaced the German from his lead twice, but Weis was able to counter each time. In the last lap, Weis had to give up his top position again, and Andrij Skwaruk, who had been seventh up to that point, reached 81.46 m. Vasily Sidorenko could not hold back and stayed on the bronze rank. But Heinz Weis countered a third time to now 81.78 m and was thus world champion.
